Behold This Heart

I have never experienced the depth of devotion to the Sacred Heart until I read this book, Behold This Heart by Fr. Dailey, published by Sophia Institute Press. This extraordinary work traces back to the origin of the Sacred Heart as the vision that appeared to St. Margaret Mary in the Seventeenth Century. The pierced heart of Christ was revealed to this humble nun and then continued to influence the world through the devotion of St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal.  I had purchased the book through a notice in my parish’s Church bulletin. Fr. Dailey serves Mass at Saint Albert the Great, in Huntingdon Valley, PA as a weekend visiting priest. His homilies are inspiring.  One morning I woke with a daunting fear and I asked God to guide me to something that would help me overcome this fear. I picked up Behold This Heart and randomly opened it to Meditation 4 (The Encouraging Heart of Jesus on the Remedy for Fear). My fear faded away as I contemplated the heart of Christ and the connection of my human heart to His diving heart, His Sacred Heart.

Becoming Women of the Word

There are several books about women in the Bible and Sarah Christmayer’s Becoming Women of the Word, published by Ave Maria Press is one of my favorites. Not only does she capture the importance of these women in salvation history but she also finds the thread of their existence that leads directly to Jesus Christ. These ordinary women of their time each have one thing in common, they said yes to God’s calling no matter the risk.  Aside from Ms. Christmyer’s insightful depictions of these heroic figures, she also reveals personal stories of women in her family that have said yes to God as well. The way the author delivers these ancient stories ignites an essential guidance for women’s roles in our modern world. This is a truly inspiring book and one that is perfect for a women’s bible study. I particularly like how the author focuses on the meanings of names. Truly relatable!

God chose a Women First

Another one of my favorite books written about women in the Bible is the winner of three national awards by Laura Savage-Rains. She gives us a fascinating account of 13 women in the Old and the New Testaments, the culture in which they lived, and how God chose them to be first as effective leaders in many significant events in the Bible. For those of you who like to read novels, the author writes as if you are reading a historical fiction with dialogue that is engaging and colorful. She also includes other aspects of each woman’s story in the form of excerpts from the Bible, the message in each woman’s voice, and Biblical truths taught through the stories. She also addresses why the voice of each woman matters.  What distinguishes this fascinating book from other works about women in the Bible is how the author adds questions and practical applications that can be applied in our 21st century lives as women chosen by God to proclaim and demonstrate God’s truths. Each story has one thing in common and that is each woman possesses what the author refers to as “resilient confidence.” Amazing!
